Setting up the grade book (explanation and 2 min video)

Unlike other grade book management software, you cannot simply add a column to the Canvas Grade book. You must create an assignment first to create a gradebook column.

This is the same video you watched for creating an assignment.  The specific information to complete the assignment for creating assignment group will start at the beginning of the video to 2:08 minutes.

The purpose is to demonstrate how to manage and set up the Assignment Index Page not the details of creating an assignment.

When you click on Assignments in the course navigation menu, the page you will see is called the Assignment Index Page. It is here you can create assignment groups, set grading rules, weight grades, publish assignments and make a placeholder for an assignment you will completely fill in with details at a later time. On this page, you can create assignment groups for organization and creating columns for grading.

Whatever grading model you use, points, percentages, weighted categories or a mix of the two, creating assignment groups helps to organize the grade book for you and provides a clear organization for students when they check their grade. They can instantly follow their progress in any of the assignment groups you are choosing to grade. (Tests, Homework, Labs ect).

If you do weight your grades (40% for homework, 40% Tests, 20% final) you will need to create weighted groups. The video shows you how to create weighted assignment groups and keeps that model through out most of the video. You don't have to create weighted groups, you can use points. It is still recommended to create assignment groups so students can track their progress in each instructional area.

FYI: Beginning of the video to 2:08 minutes  shows you how to create assignment groups.
