Announcements
Announcements behave much like Discussion boards in a course. Unless you disable student responses in the course settings, or for the particular Announcement, students can respond to the Announcement.
Notifications and Announcements
Many instructors expect that students will immediately see course announcements. It's important to keep in mind that students can edit their notifications preferences so that they don't receive any notifications sent to them outside of Canvas.
By default, notifications for announcements are sent out to students once you create an announcement and choose save. Students can change this setting. If you decide to use announcements to communicate with the entire class, it is recommended to state your expectations for reading and/or responding to your announcements.
If you want students to check for messages from you on a particular schedule, you should clearly set that expectation at the beginning of the course. It is unreasonable to expect students to check for communications more frequently than once a day.
Announcements VS email
Students will be notified of all announcements via their email and they can locate them in the Canvas classroom. Announcements will stay organized and accessible for students in Canvas. Use a concise and clear title for your announcements so students can easily find them in the list of announcements
The advantage of using announcements over email is that the announcements are saved in Canvas and students can return to read them. Emails tend to get "lost" and they are harder to sort through. It is recommended to use the Canvas inbox for personal and private communications between you and a student and use announcements for the entire class.
