This week we will continue our discussion about infectious disease by expanding our examples to include examples from around the globe. We will specifically consider the ways in which socioeconomic inequality and social changes both play a factor in infectious disease. Students have the choice to apply concepts to the case of tuberculosis or COVID-19.

This week, we will address the following questions:

Why do infectious diseases “emerge” or “resurge” in populations? How do social, political, and economic changes factor in?
How was infectious disease and colonialism connected?
How is climate change connected to infectious disease?
What are factors contributing to the “emergence” of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis?
