This is not a survey! It is an assignment in which I'm using the quiz function in Canvas. For this assignment, you will spend some time learning about the anthropological perspective on the idea of human progress and about Indigenous experience in the 21st century.
STEP 1: Watch and Read
Please watch the lecture and read the article. The lecture called, "Anthropological Perspective on Progress" gives you some concepts and ideas for thinking back on what we have learned in the class so far as well as assumptions many people have about human cultures.
The article, "Being Indigenous in the 21st Century" is excerpted from a speech given by Wilma Mankiller. Mankiller was the first female principle chief of the Cherokee Nation. She gave this speech one year after the United Nation's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
STEP 2: Write your Answers
Write answers for each of the following questions. Write them in sentence/paragraph form of approximately 1-5 sentences per question, depending on the question.
(From the lecture:)
1. Explain what anti-racism is in your own words.
2. Explain what "critical perspectives" are in your own words.
3. Explain the anthropological perspective on human progress in your own words.
(From the article:)
4. What are some of the common values among Indigenous Peoples that Mankiller describes?
5. According to the article, what is an indigenous relationship to the natural world? In other words, what are indigenous understandings of the natural world and how what makes that relationship to the natural world different from other groups of people?
6. What does Mankiller identify as the "roots of many social, economic, and political problems"?
7. What are some misconceptions about Indigenous Peoples that Mankiller identifies?
8. According to Mankiller, what challenges lie ahead for Indigenous Peoples?
9. What is one other thing you thought was interesting from the article?
STEP 3: Submit your Answers
Submit your answers by clicking the blue, "Take The Quiz" button below and copying your answers into the box in the "quiz." Although I am using the quiz feature for this, it is not a quiz. This is just an assignment. Do your best, but I'm not grading you on getting the right answer; you will be graded based on your sincere attempt to answer the questions and showing that you have read watched the lecture and read the article, even if you didn't understand all of it.
Please get in touch if you have any issues submitting your answers.
STEP 4: Check Answers
After you submit your answers, click on Attempt 1 in the Attempt History. You should be able to see information from me for each question. This information is meant to help you affirm that you were on the right track in understanding what the article was saying and the anthropological perspective or, if not, fill gaps in your understanding. You will only be able to see the answers once, so take any notes that you want to.
Please let me know if you have any problems viewing the answers.
