For this refection assignment, you need to write two journal-style reflection essays, one for each of the essay questions in STEP 1. The purpose of this assignment is for you to think about how you can apply ideas from this class to your own life. Very broadly, anthropology is the study of all of human experience across time and space. We have been talking about the past and the present. So for the second essay, we're going to reflect on the future.
Because these are a reflection essays, they do not need to be a formal academic essays with thesis statements. Instead focus on 1) fully answering the question and 2) making a connection to materials and/or key issues discussed in the course. As usual, there are no right or wrong answers.
STEP 1: Write
There are two essay questions for this Reflection assignment. For each, write 1 page per question (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 size font). (It is okay to go longer if you want, but not shorter.) Please write which question it is (Question 1 or Question 2) above your answer for that question.
Question 1 - What is something new that you learned in this class so far that has particularly impacted you? Please thoroughly explain it in your own words (it may help to imagine that you are explaining it to someone who knows nothing about the topic). Then explain how it has impacted you. For example: What kinds of things did it make you think about? Did it change the way you think about something? If so, in what way? Do you imagine yourself taking any future actions as a result of this new knowledge? Why or why not?
Question 2 -Thinking about human experience as a whole, and/or specific examples we've been learning about, what do you imagine the future will look like for humans? Then please describe what you ideally want human futures to be like (this does not have to be rooted in reality). Finally, compare the two: how is the future you imaged for humanity based on things you know similar to, or different from, your idealized image of the future.
At some point in your reflection, please make a connection to class material/key ideas.
Please write 1-2 pages (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 size font).
STEP 2: Revise and Credit Your Sources
Reread and revise your essay! This is journal-style, but rereading it before you turn it in will result in clearer communication.
While you are welcome to use MLA or APA, it is not required because all of your sources should be from our course and these are journal-style essays. That said, you must credit your sources. That means, if you refer to a specific detail from something we read or watched, please name in the sentence what the source of that information was. (For example, you can say: According to the article about the Dukha by Rasiulis...) Place direct quotes in quotation marks and name the source.
STEP 3: Save and Submit Your Assignment
Please write your response in paragraph form, save it as a .docx and submit it. (Here are directions for how to submit your assignment.)
Grading:
