This is not a quiz! It is just an assignment in which I'm using the quiz function in Canvas. For this assignment, you will learn a bit about the people indigenous to the Puget Sound region and then submit your answers to some questions about the material. In the reading, the author uses the term "Lushootseed," but this is not what Indigenous folks around Puget Sound call themselves, so I use Salish (often Coast Salish or Puget Salish) on the recommendation of a Salish student who previously took this class. This assignment will be graded based on participation and completion, not on whether or not your answers are "correct."
STEP 1: Get Ready to Read
First, if you haven't already, review the “Native American Peoples of the PNW: Centralized Authority and Potlatches” Lecture for an introduction to the Salish.
STEP 2: Read the Article
Read this article from the University of Washington (UW): "The Lushootseed Peoples of Puget Sound Country".
It is long, so you may find it works best for you to work on it in sections instead of all at the same time. Use the questions in the next step to help focus your reading.
STEP 3: Write your Answers
Write your answers to the following questions. Please use complete sentences, though some answers will only be a single sentence.
- What does the word "Lushootseed" mean? What other names have been used for the Native American peoples living around Puget Sound?
- What is Huchoosedah?
- Name three important Salish ceremonies. What time of year do the ceremonies most often take place? Why?
- What role did spirit powers play in Salish life?
- What kinds of natural resources did Salish people make use of in traditional times?
- What is the relationship between the Salish longhouse and their ideas about the way the world is organized?
- What is Sgwigwi?
- What is Slahal?
- How did the coming of white people and other colonizers change Salish life? How have Salish people adapted to these changes?
- What was the main unit of Salish society before the arrival of Europeans? Why hasn't "tribe" always worked to describe Salish social and political organization? [Note: Here I'm asking how were groups organized beyond each longhouse?] When did Salish people become organized into tribes? And what, according to the article, does "tribe" mean?
STEP 4: Submit your Answers
Submit your answers by clicking the blue, "Take The Quiz" button below and copying your answers into the box in the "quiz." Although I am using the quiz feature for this, it is not a quiz. This is just an assignment. Do your best, but I'm not grading you on getting the right answer; you will be graded based on your sincere attempt to answer the questions and showing that you have read the article, even if you didn't understand all of it.
Please get in touch if you have any issues submitting your answers.
STEP 5: Check Answers
After you submit your answers, click on Attempt 1 in the Attempt History. You should be able to see information from me for each question. This information is meant to help you affirm that you were on the right track in understanding what the article was saying and the anthropological perspective or, if not, fill gaps in your understanding. You will only be able to see the answers once, so take any notes that you want to.
Please let me know if you have any problems viewing the answers.
