Accessibility Scores and Remediation

When uploading content, Ally will scan the file and produce an accessibility score. This score is symbolized by a gauge next to documents in the Files list, in Modules where you added a document and images on Canvas pages. The gauge will be red (not accessible) to yellow, or two shades of green (accessible)green to indicate the level of accessibility. When you click on the gauge in Files or in Modules you'll be walked through an explanation of the problem and guidance on fixing the problem. You will also see the accessibility meter on Canvas pages where you have images and documents.

Note: Students do not see the accessibility meter. Only instructors will see the meters.

Alternative Formats

When you add a file to Canvas, Ally will produce alternative formats. To view/access those formats, you click on the little editing gear in Files:

In Modules, students can choose alternative formats by choosing the documents to open on a Canvas page, then choosing the small arrow next to the document.

Currently, the following formats are the ones provided:

Tagged PDF version
HTML version
ePub version
Electronic braille version
Audio

Ally Reports

Ally is a tool that provides reports as well as alternative, accessible documents for faculty and students. Using Ally is a step in the effort to support and provide training for faculty and staff in creating a welcoming and accessible online learning environment for all students.

Ally has the capacity to run reports at two levels:

*a generic overview of all documents and images in Canvas showing their level of accessibility
*specific course level reports
Faculty can pull Ally reports for their specific course

Specific course level reports can be generated by the instructor of that course.

Information gathered from generic level reports will be used to focus and guide eLearning support in providing professional development training for faculty and staff in Canvas. The tool will assist eLearning in evaluating our success in supporting faculty in using Ally to create accessible course documents.
