Need Help Paying for School?

North Seattle College's Workforce Education has multiple programs that may be able to help you pay for school. To find out if you're eligible, go to www.startnextquarter.org Links to an external site. and answer the questions.

Some basic eligibility information:

Worker Retraining

Must meet one of the criteria:

  • Received a lay-off notice and will be eligible for Unemployment Insurance benefits
  • Currently receiving Unemployment Insurance benefits
  • Your spouse is receiving Unemployment Insurance benefits and you are unemployed
  • Exhausted Unemployment Insurance benefits within the past 4 years
  • Closed down your business due to economic conditions and unemployed (must have had a business license)
  • Divorced, widowed or separated and low-income
  • Separated from U.S. Armed Services within the past 4 years.
  • Active duty military member with a separation order
  • Lost employment or experienced a reduction in employment due to a natural disaster

Worker Retraining for Vulnerable workers

Must meet at least two of the criteria below:

  • Employed in an occupation that is "not in demand" according to the demand/decline list for your county. Check here: In Demand Decline list Links to an external site.
  • No prior degree or certificate and have completed less than 45 credits of college education
  • Need to learn new skills in order to keep your job

Opportunity Grant

Must meet all of the following:

  • Washington state resident
  • No prior degree
  • Enroll in an approved pathway of study: Accounting, General Business, IBEST Early Childhood Education, IBEST Phlebotomy, IBEST Electronics, IBEST IT, Medical Assisting, Allied Health, Nursing
  • Have financial need based on the FAFSA or WASFA
  • Family income below 200% of the federal poverty level

BFET

Must meet all of the criteria:

  • Receiving federal Basic Food Assistance from DSHS
  • Able to work with intentions to obtain employment after completion of school training

WorkFirst

Must meet all of the criteria:

  • Parent receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Referred by DSHS case manager

 

The Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA)

WIOA can provide the following:

  • Guidance to identify training programs
  • Assistance developing a funding plan to pay for training
  • Training scholarships
  • On-going support and coaching
  • Job placement assistance
